Meet the Chaplain
After 40 years of blacksmithing, I felt I could be useful in making a kinder and gentler world by taking seminary classes.  Through my church, such classes were being offered, taught by Wortberg Seminary Professors.  There generally is a need for a pastor at most of our reenactments, and a possibility to aid in my own church.  So, I signed up, and after 5 years I felt qualified to tell the world of my Savior's loving grace.  Altho it is hard to tell whether I made a difference in the "kinder and gentler", I know that one person is kinder and gentler as a result - me.
At present I give messages in my own Church when Pastor is unavailable; conduct church services at Church family campouts; and conduct church services and perform Renewal of Vows at Reenactments.  For the past 4 years I have been in charge of a Men's Bible Class.  Most of all - the men of the 5th Wisconsin, Co. A, Volunteer Infantry, consider me their Chaplain.

The Impact of Chaplain Ministry during the Civil War:

  • 150,000 Confederate soldiers rededicated or were baptized during the war.
  • Eighty percent of college students in the South after the war found their religious faith while in the Confederate Army.
  • Thirteen former Confederate chaplains consecrated as bishops by 1892.
  • Twelve former Confederate chaplains became presidents of major colleges.
  • By 1890 church membership and the value of church property were double that of 1860. New growth included 10,000 new Baptist churches in Texas.
  • Former Union Army chaplains also helped with the rebuilding of the South.
  • Bishop Atticus Haygood emphasized the rise of “The New South.” But the Southern Churches conserved traditions. No major Protestant denomination except for the Protestant Episcopal Church reunited in the 19th century.
